According to a recent Gartner study, the number of IoT devices installed in various settings will expand to approximately 26 billion units by 2020. This figure does not account for smartphones, tablets and PCs, it only factors IoT-specific connected devices.
Peter Middleton, research director at Gartner, explained that IoT functionality will likely become an extremely accessible solution by 2020.
"By 2020, component costs will have come down to the point that connectivity will become a standard feature, even for processors costing less than $1 ... The fact is, that today, many categories of connected things in 2020 don't yet exist," said Middleton. All of this begs the question, "How can IT managers prepare for an influx of devices that don't yet exist?" The short answer - get ready for change. Having an advanced change management platform in place can give technology leaders the ability to coordinate and organize operations in a way that makes it easier to deal with device diversity.
